Anything we design for the patient room needs to contribute to better health outcomes and shorter lengths of stay. To that end, we had 3 goals for our Ellie Collection: 1) Design seating that addresses the holistic needs of multidimensional people (physical, cognitive, spiritual/aspirational, emotional) 2) Preserve the dignity of patients 3) Send an welcoming invitation to care partners and patients to engage, belong and be empowered.
Family and loved ones contribute to the health of patients, and they are committed—in it for the long haul. Long duration comfort requires ergonomics across multiple postures, so with Ellie, we aimed to deliver from all angles: An inclined, open seat angle evenly distributes weight and reduces shear forces for ergonomic comfort (still, the sleep surface opens flat for a great sleep). The low arm is gently angled to allow for shifting and leaning postures. The high arm is generously angled for relaxed support in a familiar, informal “shoulder-to-shoulder” reclined position with the patient.
The sofa’s curved contours wrap and embrace the sleeping user, and informed by natural flow and erosion, are soothing for the eye and hand to follow. We know from research that this language can reduce stress, heart rate and blood pressure for faster recovery and improved cognitive function. And we know from experience that serving the dignity and holistic health of people typically improves the health and sustainability of the systems they and we share.
